A alta sensibilidade da superfície UV Aeolus retorna à refletividade da superfície

As climatologias globais de refletividade de superfície ultravioleta (UV) são todas compostas de observações de sensoriamento remoto passivo à luz do dia da luz UV refletida, geralmente integradas em uma distribuição de direções de reflexão alcançáveis. Descobrimos a sensibilidade dos retornos de superfície do Aeolus lidar (LSR) às características da superfície, fornecendo a primeira evidência de que o sensoriamento remoto ativo pode ser efetivamente usado para recuperar a refletividade superficial UV unidirecional em escalas globais. O LSR reproduz mudanças mensais na refletividade da superfície no Saara, que são visíveis nas climatologias de Refletividade Equivalente Lambertiana (LER) do TROPOMI e GOME-2. Correlações muito altas (r > 0,90) entre LSR em grade e as climatologias LER são relatadas em escalas globais e regionais para 36 regiões diferentes. Três gradientes claros de cobertura do solo são discernidos a partir do sinal LSR do Aeolus: (1) água/terra, (2) vegetação/áreas áridas e (3) sem neve/neve. O sinal LSR mais forte foi recuperado sobre a neve, enquanto sobre a vegetação encontramos concordância negativa moderada (r < - 0,60) entre o LSR e o proxy do índice de vegetação. No geral, é demonstrado o sucesso do primeiro método ativo de sensoriamento remoto para recuperar a refletividade unidirecional da superfície UV usando Aeolus. Nossa abordagem pode ser usada com eficácia para detectar terras não resolvidas e, especialmente, mudanças na cobertura de neve em altas latitudes porque, ao contrário dos instrumentos passivos, o Aeolus também forneceu observações noturnas.
O conhecimento limitado das características de refletividade da superfície nos comprimentos de onda ultravioleta (UV) tem sido uma fonte de resultados conflitantes em estudos anteriores . Esta lacuna é particularmente preocupante, uma vez que precisamos conhecer as características de refletância da superfície UV para compreender a exposição humana aos UV e para recuperar estimativas precisas da profundidade óptica do aerossol em 355 nm2. Mais importante ainda, as informações sobre a refletividade da superfície são um pré-requisito para qualquer aplicação que exija modelagem precisa de transferência radiativa, como sensoriamento remoto espacial de gases residuais, aerossóis/nuvens ou modelos de transporte químico. Além disso, as fortes características de refletância superficial das superfícies brancas no comprimento de onda UV3,4 revelam o potencial para a detecção de superfícies de neve ou mesmo a classificação do tipo de neve (antiga/nova) se um mapa de refletância superficial UV preciso e de alta resolução puder ser gerado. Esta informação é essencial para evitar o albedo subestimado da neve5, que pode afectar negativamente os instrumentos passivos de detecção remota em latitudes elevadas.
Apesar da necessidade de estimativas precisas do albedo superficial para estudos climáticos e pesquisas atmosféricas, nossa compreensão da refletividade superficial em escala global na banda espectral UV permanece limitada. Até o momento, todos os estudos de sensoriamento remoto têm se baseado em instrumentos passivos para recuperar características de refletividade superficial em UV, que utilizam o sol e a radiação atmosférica relacionada como fonte de luz para a recuperação. Por exemplo, as climatologias de Refletividade Equivalente Lambertiana (LER) geradas usando tais métodos contêm erros substanciais, decorrentes da necessidade de aplicar correção atmosférica, infligindo mais efeitos adversos em comprimentos de onda mais curtos3. Estas climatologias não levam em consideração quaisquer observações de regiões de alta latitude durante a noite polar e são baseadas em observações sobre todos os ângulos hemisféricos sólidos, exigindo suposições sobre o tipo de refletância lambertiana. Estudos anteriores indicaram que estas deficiências e suposições podem ser atenuadas pela detecção remota activa, como a sondagem lidar6, que beneficia do pequeno campo de visão, o estável; fonte unidirecional de luz do laser utilizado e o ângulo de visão constante das observações. Além disso, as observações lidar podem fornecer características unidirecionais de refletividade da superfície, como retroespalhamento atenuado da superfície (sr-1)7, sem suposições sobre a heterogeneidade e isotropia da superfície horizontal subjacente necessária para instrumentos passivos1.
